ARTIST / / FILMMAKER  (VANCOUVER - LOS ANGELES )

 SHE/THEY

Allison Beda’s artistic practice delves into the personal, and examines passion and obsession, often poetically exploring the intersection of cinema, dance and "narrative" (which is sometimes documentary) - The work doesn't fit into a neat category, or any category at all, resulting in bold and unique films.  Her very first short film  Know Your Alphabet is a darkly comic personal poetic and alphabetical short examination of life and death (and war and peace). It has toured the world with the likes of Stan Brakhage and is still being invited to screen internationally.  Allison turned her first career as an international fashion model into the feature documentary How To Be A Model (A 12 Step Plan). The work strove to effectively document the world and experience of being a “typical” non-superstar model, while also highlighting how intrusive “documenting” can be, and how the “truth” in any documentary is controlled and filtered by the documentarian. Critics deemed it “an intriguing insider look filled with shattered stereotypes”. and festivals heralded it as “an insightful examination of what it means to be a model, a filmmaker, and a friend”.

Allison is deeply committed to collaborating across art forms with other artists and bringing the work to audiences in unique ways to create memorable viewing experiences.  Besides traditional theatre and gallery settings, internationally her film work has been exhibited in public parks, on motion billboards, in the metro (in Canada and Europe), and on giant screens throughout the Winter Olympic games in Vancouver.  Her recent work is part of the "Parallel Screens" installation curated by Brunno Silva, which has been exhibited in San Diego, São Paulo Brazil, and Weimar Germany. Weimar Germany,

Allison is a contributor to the cultural magazine IMAGISTA. She holds BA in film from Simon Fraser University, an MFA from the University of BC, lecturing at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, SFU, and UBC (where she created a summer intensive credit course for students with no filmmaking experience to write, direct, shoot and edit a short film).  Her work as an IATSE camera operator on various network features and television series helped her hone her strong visual style and her work as an Associate Producer on shows like the SYFY/Universal series 12 Monkeys taught her exactly what and when you can (and cannot) "Fix it in post".

Mx. Beda is the Founder and Creative Director of A Muse Productions Inc., which loves making films about women who make trouble and film art that defies categorization.
